Vernis D. Hendrix passed away in Holdenville on Saturday afternoon, November 1, 2014, at the age of 84 years.
Vernis was the son of Henry H. Hendrix & Lessie Mary (Russell) Hendrix, born on June 13, 1930,in Martinez, California, and brought up in Non, Oklahoma. He attended Non and Gerty schools, and was a graduate of Gerty High School. He joined the U.S. Army and served three years, then returned to Non, where he met Norma Jean Stanfill.
Vernis & Norma were married in Non on February 16, 1951, and made their home in Holdenville. They were the parents of three children: Shirley, Verna, and David. Vernis worked several years at various occupations - he drove a laundry truck, worked for B&M Motor Company, drove a truck for Yellow Transit, worked for RWIT Drilling, owned and operated Hendrix Grocery & Station on South Echo Street - then went to work and stayed put at the Army Ammunition Depot in McAlester, where he retired after twenty-five years, in 1990. He loved to raise cows, and to fish and hunt. He enjoyed using his guns and taking meticulous care of them. He also took care of a few selected lawns in town. He was a very proficient and pleasant man, and he will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Lessie Hendrix; his sister and brother-in-law, Norma & Doug Hipfner, and brother-in-law Charles Fox; his parents-in-law, Aubrey & Velma Stanfill.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Norma, of the home; three children: Shirley Jean Smith (Steve) of Jenks, Verna Douglas (David) of Holdenville, and David Hendrix (Hope) of McAlester; nine grandchildren: Jo Smith (Chandee) of Sand Springs, Holly Parsons of Tulsa, Charity Harris of Holdenville, Robyn Bates (Kevin) of Holdenville, Sherry Terrell of Crossville, Alabama, Adam Stapp (Alicia) of Holdenville, Mandy Stonehocker (Justin) of Coweta, Bo Hendrix (Chelsea) of Holdenville, and Candace Hendrix of McAlester; seventeen great grandchildren; one brother, Charles A. Hendrix of Coalgate, and one sister, Lou Fox of Ozark, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, and Vernis will be laid to rest in the Non Cemetery. Rev. Earl Scroggins is the officiating ministers. Pallbearers are Jon Madden, Bo Hendrix, Charles Hendrix, Mike Hendrix, Richard Hipfner, and Justin Stonehocker.
