Obituary

Roger Scott McElroy passed away in Holdenville on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at the age of 54 years.

Roger was the son of Clarence Lawrence 'Larry' McElroy & Coleela Mae (Horn) McElroy, born on July 12, 1959, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The family moved to Holdenville in 1963, when Roger was four years old, and Holdenville was his lifelong home. He attended Holdenville schools and was a 1977 graduate of Holdenville High School. He attended several semesters and acquired several college hours at East Central University in Ada. He grew up working in his father's Red Bud Grocery Store on East Main Street, and after his father passed away, managed the store from 1985 until its closing. He worked many years for Green's OLG as a propane distributor and manager of the Holdenville office. He was currently employed by the City of Holdenville Street Department.

Roger began to feel the call to ministry and became active in the Holdenville First Baptist Church, serving in church activities and youth ministries from 1991 to 1996. He answered the call to ministry and since 1996 has served as Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Holdenville.

He was a devoted follower of his children's sports activities from the time they began when they were small. He coached Little League, and for two decades was the radio voice of the Holdenville Wolverines, through the 90s and the 2000s. He was an avid sports fan of his own favorite teams, the St. Louis Cardinals and the OU Sooners. And he had a favorite saying that his family will always remember was 'Him': "Don't take any wooden nickels." It's a fitting motto for a man who was one hundred percent genuine.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Larry & Coleela McElroy, and his niece, Gina McElroy.

He is survived by three children: Derek Lawrence McElroy, Megan Jane Griffith and husband Clint, all of Oklahoma City, and Abby MaeLynn McElroy, of the home; one grandson, Myles Lawrence Griffith, and Baby Griffith on the way; one brother, Greg McElroy of Tulsa, and two sisters, Janis McElroy of Holdenville and Jennifer Clark and husband Trenton of San Antonio, Texas; three nephews: Josh McElroy and wife Satomi and their son Riki, of McKinney, Texas, Jake McElroy and his three children, Michael, Brandon, and Kayleen, all of San Antonio, Texas, and Lafe McElroy and his son Eli, of Holdenville; one niece, Isabelle Clark of San Antonio, Texas; other family members, and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 13, 2014, 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Holdenville, and Roger will be laid to rest in the Holdenville Cemetery. Officiating ministers are Rev. Danny Frazee, Rev. Tim Green, and Rev. Dane Robinson. Pallbearers are Woody Frazee, Tom Janes, Jack Sherry, Brownie Harjo, Homer Alexander, Charlie Adkinson, Jerry Hoover, and Frank Moppin. Honorary pallbearers are Greg McElroy, Trent Clark, Josh McElroy, Jake McElroy, Lafe McElroy, and Harold Heath.
