Obituary

Roberta Kay Harjo passed away in Holdenville, Oklahoma on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at the age of sixty-two years with her family by her side.

Kay was the daughter of Newman Harjo Jr. & Cindy Lee (Bruner) Harjo, born on December 23, 1961, in Claremore, Oklahoma. She attended Bearden Public School, Okemah High School and graduated Holdenville High School with the Class of 1980. She was a dedicated worker.  She worked for Seamprufe in Holdenville, United Design in Wewoka, and Wrangler in Seminole until they all closed. She then worked at Leachco in Ada for a short time. She later traveled to Utah for several months working as a factory worker and then returned to Oklahoma.  She was a correctional officer working for Davis correctional in Holdenville.  She changed her career to a daycare worker for the Muscogee Creek Nation Daycare in Holdenville where her failing heath forced her to retire.

Kay fiercely loved to watch all her nieces and nephews play sports.  She was an enthusiastic and devoted Wolverine fan. She enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, coloring, and teaching the kids the Creek language. She loved playing Candy Crush on her phone, listening to Creek hymns, and spending time with family.  Her favorite place to eat was San Marcos Mexican restaurant in Oklahoma City.  Her favorite tv shows were Criminal Minds, Law and Order, and The Voice.  She would also  say "Let's go to Chicago" and settle in to watch her favorite shows Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD. She enjoyed watching birds - particularly hummingbirds - outside her window with her great-nephew Noah.  He was her sidekick and she loved spending time with him. Noah always wanted to go to Kay's house, and stay with her. They had a special bond that Kay loved very much. Kay was baptized at  Greenleaf Missionary Baptist Church in Okemah.  Although she was not able to attend church services, she would always ask to hear sermons especially relative Pastor Mitchell Taylor.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Newman Harjo Jr. & Cindy Harjo; her brother, Glenn Harjo; three nephews: Marcus Lee Harjo, Brandon Scott Puente, and Dillon Harjo; one great-niece, Keelie Shaye Fixico.

She is survived by three sisters: Carol Ann Harjo, Barbara Colleen Jackson (Pedro Garcia), and Penny Harjo, all of Holdenville; one brother, Thomas Harjo of Henryetta; nephews and nieces: Timothy 'Bucket' Harjo, Nicholas Jackson, McKenzie Jackson, Felicia Harjo, Alicia Harjo, Zach Harjo, and John Harjo; great-nephews: Chase Crockett, Kehl Harjo, Alyc Harjo, Kilian Harjo, Silas Puente, Bryson Moses, Noah Moses, and Jordan Chick; two young men she regarded as her nephews, Aaron Torres and Wyatt Seeley; other family members, and many friends.
