Monroe Allin Sumter passed away in Oklahoma City on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the age of 71 years.
Monroe was the son of Monroe Allin Sumter Sr & Marjorie (Anderson) Sumter, born on July 21, 1945, in Claremore, Oklahoma, where he was brought up and attended schools. He graduated Claremore High School in 1963 and attended Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA), now Rogers State University, in Claremore. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
He married Linda Montgomery in Claremore on March 4, 1966. They lived for a few years in Dixon, Illinois, before returning to Oklahoma. Monroe served as Carter County OSU Extension 4-H Educator in Ardmore, and Osage County OSU Extension 4-H Educator in Pawhuska, before moving to Holdenville in the Fall of 1976. In Holdenville he served as the Hughes County OSU Extension Agriculture Agent and County Extension Director, and also as advisor and director of the Hughes County 4-H Club. Linda owned and operated the Capri Beauty Salon. They attended the Free Will Baptist Church in Holdenville. They were blessed with forty-three years together before Linda passed away in 2008.
Monroe earned his Masters Degree in Agriculture from OSU. He worked twenty-three years as the Hughes County Extension Director. He retired on December 30, 1998, but never did slow down. He was first and foremost a cattle farmer, and a longtime member of the Cattlemen's Association. He loved being outside, and enjoyed tinkering with cars and farm equipment. He was an astute businessman and loved a challenge, his latest endeavor being the owning and operation of Monroe's Fuel filling station in Holdenville. He loved music of all kinds and particularly loved to dance, especially the two-step. He loved dressing up for Halloween, and at Christmastime he loved driving around town in his red Corvette, dressed in his Santa Claus costume, waving and making everybody smile. And he never wanted anyone to know, but quietly, behind the scenes, he went about doing a lot of good for a lot of people. He found great satisfaction in making people happy, and loved to lend a helping hand in any way he could. He had a kind and generous heart, and was the sort of man who will be missed not only by his family and friends, but by the many people in the community whose days he brightened.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda; his parents, Monroe & Marjorie Sumter; his grandson Christian, and his brother James.
He is survived by three daughters: Lanette Callison (Phillip) of Madill, Amy Jeter (Mike) of Las Vegas NV, and Mandy Jo Roberson (Josh) of Seminole; four grandchildren: Kyle and Mason Callison of Madill, Baylen and Emery Roberson of Seminole; six sisters, two brothers; special friend Patricia Derk of Tecumseh; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
