Mary Etta Grizzle passed away in Wewoka on Friday morning, May 23, 2014, at the age of 91 years.
Mary was the daughter of Sampson Pink 'S. P.' Saunders & Etta (Stanley) Saunders, born on November 16, 1922, in Vernon, Texas. The family moved to Atwood, Oklahoma, where Mary was brought up and attended schools, graduating Yeager High School in 1939.
She was married to John William Grizzle in Holdenville on March 21, 1942, and they made their home in Holdenville. They were the parents of a son, J. W. 'Dub' and daughter, DeEtta. Mary worked for 25 years at Seamprufe and John worked as a heavy equipment operator, 19 years grading county roads for Hughes County. They moved in the early 1960s to Riverside, California, along with their two children and their families, and lived there for 33 years. John operated heavy equipment in the orange groves, and Mary worked for BR & BR Sportswear. They retired and moved back home to Holdenville in September of 1979. John passed away in 1993.
Mary enjoyed sewing and gardening, but her happiness was her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She thought the world of them and they were the light of her life.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, S. P. & Etta Saunders; her beloved husband of 51 years, John Grizzle; her sister, Ann Watts, and four brothers: Tom Saunders, Pat Saunders, Frank Saunders, and James Saunders.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, J. W. 'Dub' & Donna Grizzle of Riverside, California, and her daughter and son-in-law, DeEtta & Phillip Wardlow of Holdenville; Six grandsons: Chris (Kay) Wardlow of Norman, Keith (Angie) Wardlow of Holdenville, John (Jenny) Wardlow of Piedmont, James Grizzle of Riverside, California, Michael Grizzle of Corona, California, and Robert Grizzle of Spokane, Washington; three granddaughters: Rayelene Winters of Holdenville, Edie Hinton of Tennessee, and Lisa Britts of Riverside, California; sixteen great grandchildren: Garrett, Morgan, Bryce, Bethany, Brianna, Garrett, Aspen, Raegan, Brayden, Timmy, Tiffany, Tabitha, Darien, Cooper, Kaden, and Taylor; five great great grandchildren; two sisters, Dona Merkel of Mesquite, Texas and Middy Lou Wright of Arizona; various other family members and friends.
Mary will be laid to rest in the Holdenville Cemetery following private family services at a later date.
