Larry Walter Langwell was born on February 20, 1949 in Allen, Oklahoma to John Walter and Lillian Louise Langwell. Larry grew up in the neighboring communities of Hanna, Pharoah, Wetumka, Calvin, and Holdenville. He was part of the graduating class of 1967 from Holdenville High School, and joined the United States Marine Corp shortly after. Larry served 3 months in Vietnam before becoming severely injured from a landmine. He spent several months recuperating aboard hospital ships in both Guam and North Carolina. Larry earned several honorary awards and recognition during his time in the Marines, with the most the prestigious of them all being the Purple Heart award.
Upon his return to civilian life, he married his first wife, Kathy, and had two children: Shelly Carol and Bryan Keith. He went on to graduate from Okmulgee Tech with a degree in drafting, and later finished a course in Sulphur in automotive paint and body. This would later go onto serve as his calling card, for Larry was extremely talented with paint and body repair. He turned out lots of skillfully restored and slicked up cars, trucks, and motorcycles throughout the years.
He married his second wife, Lu Anne Penuel, on August 31, 1978 and became a stepfather to Lu's 3year old daughter, Annie. He began working in the oil field for RWIT Drilling and soon became acquainted with IT Troup, Wayne Wilson, and Bill Janes. They were faithful friends to Larry and he loved them very much.
Larry and Lu moved to Horntown, and that is where they called home for over 37 years. Larry and Lu soon welcomed a baby daughter- Elizabeth Kate - in June 1982, and one last daughter arrived - Emily Lu - in January 1986. To provide for his family, Larry commuted daily to Tinker field in OKC for 23 years. He was so proud when he was awarded the prestigious Civilian of the Quarter in 1997.
In almost four decades of living in the Moss community, Larry proudly served for 2 terms on the Moss school board and was an enthusiastic supporter of Pirate softball and the Ag program. He loved his community and local school, and they loved him back in return. Larry was a member of the Texas Banner Church of God, and would tell you that he's a sinner saved by grace. He spent many a morning with Lu at the kitchen table, reading the Word and in prayer. He also enjoyed working at the church and especially assisting with the community food bank.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David Langwell, son-in-law Rickey Vincent, and grandchildren Matthew and Sarah Gavin.
He is survived by his wife, Lu; children Shelly, Bryan, Annie, Liz, and Emily; sister Sandy Kirkland, and her husband, Tommy; grandchildren Kinsey, Sam, Kathryn, Baylor, Lane, Cy, Andy, Kale, and Baby Aaron on the way. Larry leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who dearly love him.
He also leaves one very special friend, who has loved Larry consistently and faithfully, not only in word - but also in deed, John Earl "The Holdenville Pearl" Cason.
Our Larry Walter will surely be missed, and will always be loved.
