James Edward
Sorrell
September 20, 1941 – February 4, 2024
James Edward Sorrell was born September 20, 1941 at home in Overland Park, Kansas to Thomas Edward and Maudie Mae (Parrett) Sorrell. He was raised in and around Nowata, Oklahoma during his early childhood and later moved to Newkirk, Oklahoma where he finished school. He later met the love of his life, Nevora June Storts at church youth camp in Bristow, Oklahoma in July 1962 and later married her March 13, 1963 at Texas Banner Church of God, South of Wetumka, Oklahoma. They made their home in several places but settled south of Wetumka, Oklahoma on November 15, 1969 where they raised their four children, Jeffrey Don, Joe Neil, Julie Ann, and Jonathan Eric Sorrell.
James worked in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma from February 1964 to December 1966 for Aero Commander and later for the Oklahoma City Water Department and then moved to Wetumka where he was employed by Kenneth Hughes as a peanut farmer for thirty-nine years. He semi-retired and started working for David Smith farming/ranching in 2008 and retired fully after eight years in March 2016 for a total of 47+ years.
James attended Texas Banner Church of God in rural Wetumka and later the First Church of God in Holdenville where he always enjoyed playing dominoes, putting puzzles together, Men's prayer breakfasts, fishing and fellowshipping with others. He loved to go visiting family and friends whenever he could and would lend a hand on building or maintenance projects, where he always brought his contagious laugh and ornery spirit. One of his fondest memories was when he went on a mission trip to build a church in Guatemala, Mexico in June 1979. He loved the Lord and his faith was strong.
James passed from this life on Sunday, February 4, 2024, in Holdenville, Oklahoma at the age of 82 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Nevora June Sorrell; parents Thomas Edward and Maudie Mae Sorrell; sisters Shirley Sorrell and Bertha Sorrell Tull; two brothers, Andy Sorrell and Dewey Sorrell.
He is survived by his children: Jeff Sorrell of Collinsville OK, Joe Sorrell of Wetumka OK, Danny and Julie Underwood of Van Buren AR, and Jonathan and Melissa Sorrell of Wetumka OK; eight grandchildren and their spouses: Heather Tong, Felicia Sorrell, Hannah Rose and husband Jeremy, Sarah Franklin and husband DeMone, Alyssa Underwood, Dannah Hill and husband Caleb, parker Sorrell and Braelyn Sorrell; eleven great-grandchildren: Brayden, Samuel, Ayden and Julianne Rose; and Jordan and Carson Tong; and Elijah, Kye and Nehemiah Franklin; and Ryker and soon-to-be Baby Hill, and many family and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 7, 1:00pm at First Church of God, 624 East Main Street in Holdenville, and James was laid to rest at McMahan Cemetery east of Horntown, Oklahoma.
