Jackie Garfield 'Jack' Babb passed away at his home in Holdenville on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the age of 69 years.
Jack was the son of Eugene Garfield Babb & Neoma Ruth Babb, born on April 6, 1945, in Holdenville, Oklahoma, where he was brought up and attended schools. Several years of his boyhood were spent in Hollis, Oklahoma, before the family returned to Holdenville when Jack was fifteen years old. That's when Sue Chancellor latched onto him, and he never escaped Sue or Holdenville for the rest of his life.
Jack & Sue were married on May 25, 1963, in Holdenville, and made their home there. They were blessed with a son and daughter, Bo and Tracy. Jack worked as an auto mechanic, and he was a very good one. He worked for Paul Cagle, Perry's Ford, and John Gibbs Motor Company. He loved his work, and even after opening his own shop in 1975, still worked at various places, mostly just helping when other garages were in a bind. He'd work a week or so at a time for his brother Bob at his Buick dealership in McAlester, and at other garages and auto mechanic shops in Wewoka and other nearby towns when they were needing help.
When he wasn't working, Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to go camping, and the kids have fond memories of the family heading for the lake at Broken Bow or Eufaula, nearly every weekend as soon as the shop closed on Friday afternoon. In his later years, Jack took up golfing and loved it. And in between everything, there was always a game of Dominoes going on. Jack & Sue had sort of planned to stay in Holdenville until their parents and all the old folks had passed on, then maybe travel a little. But they liked Holdenville too well, and were too settled in and enjoying life too much to ever set out to see the world. So they stayed home, and the years flew by, and in no time at all they were celebrating 51 years together, in the spring of 2014. Jack passed away just before their 52nd anniversary after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was much loved and will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Misty Dawn Babb; four brothers: Bob Babb, Ray Babb, Billy Babb, and Home Leroy Babb; two nephews, Chris Babb and Mike Babb.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sue, of the home; two children, Bo Babb and wife Rhonda, and Tracy Lowe, all of Holdenville; four grandchildren: Bo Babb and wife Ashley, of Norman, Jackie Babb of Holdenville, Tiffany Cook and husband Jeff, of Wewoka, and Cale Babb of Holdenville; two great granddaughters, Savannah Deatherage and Jaxley Babb, both of Holdenville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny & Pam Babb of Holdenville and Wayne & Sherri Babb of Wewoka; three sisters: Marie Grimes and Fern Shockley, both of Holdenville, and Jane Myers of Oklahoma City; numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many, many friends; his beloved dog, Sadie.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 14, 2015, 1:00 p.m. at Holdenville Church of the Nazarene, and Jack will be laid to rest in the Holdenville Cemetery. Rev. Dane Robinson is the officiating minister. Pallbearers are Brian Jackson, Billy Weaver, Jeff Cook, Johnny Babb Jr., Robert Babb, and Jesse Babb.
