Florene Curtis passed away at Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at the age of 94 years.

Florene was the daughter of Eldon & Donna (Maddox) Vines, born on August 15, 1917, in Mount Ida, Arkansas. She was reared in Mount Ida and in the neighboring community of Sims, where she attended schools and graduated high school. She was married to Moses T. Curtis in 1936, at the local bank in Mount Ida. They lived for a few years in Arkansas and in Carlsbad, New Mexico, then moved to southern California, where they lived in Porterville, Fallbrook, and San Jacinto. They made their home in San Jacinto for 49 years, from 1947 to 1996, then moved to Wewoka. After 66 years together, Mr. Curtis passed away in 2002.

Florene was a member of the Church of God Seventh Day in Shawnee. She loved to sew and cook, and especially enjoyed growing flowers and gardening, often in her later years from a chair she carried out into the garden or flower bed.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Eldon & Donna Vines; her husband, Moses Curtis; two sons, Jerry Curtis and Fred Curtis, and one daughter, Donna Sharp; four brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by three sons: Ben Curtis of Wewoka, James Curtis and wife Sharon, of Elk Grove, California, Anthony Curtis and wife Karen of Wewoka; seventeen grandchildren, three step grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; one sister, Beulah Farga of Mount Ida, Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Memorial service will be Saturday, September 3, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at the Church of God Seventh Day in Shawnee, with Pastor Ruben Marquez officiating.
