Obituary

C B Sumner passed away in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the age of 86 years.

C B was the son of Grover & Iva (Hester) Sumner, born on September 7, 1926, in Non, Oklahoma. He attended Jones Academy in Hartshorne, Oklahoma, and Haskell Indian Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, and was deeply proud of his Choctaw Indian heritage. In high school he was a two-time Golden Glove Boxing Champion, and a member of an undefeated football team that won a national championship.

C B married Margaret Gurley on February 1, 1947, in Oklahoma City. They made their home in Oklahoma City, where he worked as a steel fabricator and welder, 22 years for Robertson Steel and 20+ years for Capitol Steel until his retirement. He was a member of Welders Local #584 Union. C B & Margaret raised two children, Frank and Linda Sue, and were blessed with 57 years together before she passed away on April 28, 2004.

C B's favorite things were bowling, horse racing, and visiting with friends and relatives. He bowled four times a week, as a member of three separate leagues and in a weekly jackpot, undeterred by two knee replacements. He enjoyed horse racing - watching, betting, and everything connected with the sport, ever since his son and his brother got him involved in the sport. He loved visiting with family and friends and, until just three weeks before his death, was in the habit of traveling around the state to visit relatives or to various nursing homes to spend time with old boxing buddies.

C B is preceded in death by his parents, Grover & Iva Sumner; his wife, Margaret; one brother, Rex Sumner.

He is survived by two children, Frank Sumner and wife Joyce of Wellston, Oklahoma, and Linda Sue Garcia of Edmond, Oklahoma; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest Sumner of Checotah, and Claude Sumner of Okmulgee; three sisters: Doris Lewis of Yukon, Loie Kay Livingston of Missouri, and Twilla Thornton of Ada; numerous nieces and nephews, various other relatives, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 10, 2013, 1:00 p.m. at Heritage Rock Church in Holdenville, and C B was laid to rest in the Non Cemetery at Non, Oklahoma. Rev. Mike Hays was the officiating minister. Pallbearers were Rick Sumner, Stanley Sumner, Rodney Sumner, Joseph O'Brien, Matt Owen, and HD Hester. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Sumner, Ken Edwards, and Bert Griffin.
